Intro and Summary: Why write a novel on a blog?
Well, I decided to take the odd stop of writing this novel on a blog, because I thought that would be a way to actually get 'er done!
I would be published, and actually have this story that's been rattling around in my head for 15 years or so out there - you know - have the characters and situations and slightly altered reality take a little hold on this universe.
Ever since I was a child I loved the best science fiction and fantasy novels - that which twisted our reality just a shake - and in doing so held up a mirror to our own society. I always wanted to join my voice to that volume of work, but life just get getting in the way. Writing is hard work.

Working Title: The Grandson.
Genre: Fantasy/Science Fiction/Adventure/ but not so far away that you won't recognize yourself!
TimeLine: The main part of the story happens around the third decade of the twenty-first century. Flashbacks to the very early twenty-first century/late twentieth century, and even to World War II Europe and prehistory set up important characters in the story.
Protagonist: Leah Ollinkoff is a middle aged Jewish Artist. She is the daughter of a holocaust survivor, and has enjoyed the mixed blessing of a long career as a controversial political commentator with her art. Though capable of humor and love, much of Leah's art is dark and moody and it comments on social conditions. Many of her work has caused politicians an large businesses to duck, and is exhibited in contemporary art galleries and all over cyberspace. However, while Leah's name is know, she has never gained great riches from her work, but made a simple living from royalties, purchases, speaking engagements, and workshops.
She has been married twice. The first time she married Trevor Rosen, a brilliant, dashing AIDS researchers whose vaccine discoveries would earn him the Noble prize right around 2010. However, his preliminary researches and early inventions earned him fame and money even before he became a household name. They had one daughter, Julia. However, their marriage did not end well, as Trevor tended to be a philanderer (though always a charming one). Leah and Trevor seperated when Julia was about a year old.
The Ollinkoff Family
Leah married David Ollinkoff a few months later. He had been a friend since high school, and was the type of solid responsible (and maybe slightly boring person) that Leah craved after her experiences with Trevor.
They had another daughter, Jenny, right after their marriage. Jenny, who fits into the middle child role in this family, becomes the speaker for most of this story, while Julia - the oldest, burdened by a complex relationship with Trevor, and her own inherited brilliance - actually becomes an antagonist. Julia grows up to excel in school, display an assertive personality, and seems to inherit Trevor's good looks and slim grace. Jenny looks more like Leah, but tends to be more passive. She is bright, but never really finds anything that motivates her to excel, and has a hard time finding herself. She is short, with red frizzy hair, and a body that tends to get plump. Still, it is always easier for David and Leah to 'get along' with Jenny, while Julia - assertive and slightly bullying since childhood - though she is very indepandant, and doesn't seem to seek or need a lot of handling.
Later David and Leah had a set of twins - Mitch and Eli. Mitch is a fair haired, robust, good natured boy. He is the sort of person who is always captain of his softball team, and the first to lead a pickup game of hoops in the driveway. Eli, on the other hand is thin and dark complexioned, and was also born with an autism spectrum disorder. As a child, he has the aspect of a slim and silent pixie boy in the Ollinkoff home. Julia finds him disturbing, but Jenny feels very protective of her younger brother. Eli does not speak until a crisis brings out his vocal ability when he and Mitch are about nine years old.
At the time when Leah raised her family, Leah's mother - Rachel Levi - also lived with them. Rachel was born in France, and survived the holocaust as a girl. She had immigrated to the U.S. as a teenager, taken in by relatives in Houston, where they still live. She worked as a French teacher and tutor, and married well into her thirties. She and her husband had Leah when Rachel was almost forty, and Leah was an only child.
Other Characters
Patrick - Patrick was the result of a cloning experiment at World Tech. He was produced by genetic material from a rare find of Neanderthal DNA in a frozen skeleton. Some modern human DNA also had to be used to make up for missing sequences. He is about the same age as the twins, Mitch and Eli, and was raised in total secrecy by a married team of researchers who cloned him. Patrick has racial memories, a talent that modern Homo Sapiens appear to lack.
Adam - Adam is a much later experiment in genetic engineering of a person with a superior intellect. As an adult researcher for World Tech, Jennifer donates some material for Adam, making her a sort of parent to him. Later, when Leah stumbles across Adam, she accepts him as her grandchild.
Trevor - Trevor Rosen is Leah's first husband and Julia's biological father. Though David raised Julia, and is the one she calls, Dad, Trevor does have contact with her. When his reasearch team develops an AIDS vaccine around 2010, he is always generous with money for Julia and her siblings (who he considers his nieces and nephews), but not with his time. He dissapoints Julia on an emotional level just like he dissapointed her mother, Leah. But he never really makes excuses for himself, and always shows up with a charmig smile, lots of presents, and usually a new girlfriend.
Later, Trevor's lifestyle gets to him, and he becomes addicted to prescription drugs. He falls from fame and publicity, and loses most of his money. With just a modest income from his few safe investments, Trevor eventually frees himself from is addictions and approaches middle age as a much more likable sort of person. He volunteers himself as the doctor at Fat City - the huge homeless tent city, established under a freeway interchange.
